To be clear, the Microsoft Display Dock isn’t designed to fix Microsoft’s mobile woes on its own. The tiny Microsoft Display Dock is designed to help with Windows Phone’s struggle. Around the world its in better shape, but still not the hit smartphone operating system that Microsoft hoped for in 2010 when it unveiled Windows Phone 7. Windows Phone is solidly in third place in mature markets. Five years after it first tried to take on Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android with a modern mobile operating system of its own, the company has relatively little to show for its efforts. You can also attach USB mouse, keyboards, and storage devices to the Dock, to recreate the Windows PC experience from your phone.Microsoft’s smartphone efforts are stuck in a rut. Once the Display Dock is attached to the Lumia 950, you can connect to an HDMI or a DisplayPort monitor. On the other side of the Display Dock is the USB Type-C port to connect to the Lumia 950 over the USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable. There is also one DisplayPort 1.2 port and one HDMI 1.4 port, either of which you can use to connect to an external monitor.
The Microsoft Display Dock has one USB Type-C and three USB Type-A downstream ports running at USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5 Gb/s) speeds. The Display Dock comes with accessories including USB Type-C AC Adapter and USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable. The Display Dock packaging is a lot like the Lumia 950's packaging. The Microsoft Display Dock was released to support Continuum which is Microsoft's technology for allowing Microsoft phones like the Lumia 950 to create a Windows PC experience over USB Type-C.
